Rhonda works using techniques used before the industrial age, with today’s materials. She specializes in freehand bronze painting, bronze powder stenciling, gold leaf painting, reverse glass painting and eglomise on home accessories and furniture. Below are examples of Rhonda’s work, although her collection contains more designs and pieces than shown here. You can purchase a piece seen below, see the full array of her existing collection or discuss a custom piece by contacting her at 704.223.3761 or rhonda@ornamentalartist.com

Reverse glass painting and eglomise

Rhonda repairs damaged glasses, reproduces the designs of broken antique glasses and creates new custom designs with historical accuracy.
The fine art of reverse gilding, or eglomise, and reverse glass painting are both accomplished using the techniques and materials artisans used in the 18th and 19th centuries. The technique is used for surface decoration for clock tablets and mirror panels. 23kt gold is adhered with gelatin size on the reverse side of the glass, reverse etched and backed with paint. Reverse glass paintings are worked in oils from detail to background, all on the back of the glass.

Boxes

Stenciling using metallic powders became on of the mot popular and widespread methods of decorating furniture after about 1815, It was developed as a less expensive alternative to gold ormolu mounts and gilding and was favored as a flexible means of decorating even difficult areas on furniture. The effects could be as complex or as simple as desired, depending on the number of stencils used and the variety of metallic colors. Many of the bronze powder stenciled and painted boxes show here are reproductions of nineteenth century wood boxes. The floor of each box is lined with French marbelized paper. Custom designs are also available. Choose one of the designs show here or over 30 reproduction designs in Rhonda's collection, or have an original design made for you. Please contact Rhonda to place your order or discuss design options.

Cornices

Painted, decorated and gilt bed and window cornices were available in this country by the 1790s, when the resurgence of stylish painted furniture occurred. By the late 1820s many were stenciled, produced by the same workshops that turned out stencil decorated furniture. The patterns shown here are just some of the over 35 designs available from Rhonda's collection. They are a combination of stenciling, freehand bronze and gold leaf techniques. Colors and sizes can be adjusted to fit your windows and home decor. Please contact Rhonda for more information or to place an order.
